Advanced Foreign Language is also known as Spanish III. Students should expect to use their knowledge that they have gained from both Spanish I and Spanish II. You should be familiar with the vocabulary, grammar and culture from these introductory level classes before continuing on to this course. Reminder: Language is not something you can memorize for the test and forget - we build. You will use it again and again. Retain your knowledge by studying often and using it just as frequently.

Sophomores enrolled in this class (second semester) should expect a survey of literary works from American authors and regarding American culture.
Students should expect to: write short papers (1-3 pages) weekly, write 4 formal essays per quarter, write a major research paper annually, speak or present 1-3 times this semester, discuss/debate topics monthly, maintain a portfolio of personal reading and writing, read 4-5 books and demonstrate understanding, take and organize notes weekly.
This course covers the basic skills and vocabulary of 8th grade Intro to Art and is the prerequisite to other art course selections.

Civic education is essential for active participation by informed citizens. This course will emphasize a study of government and individual rights and responsibilities. Examination of rules and laws and the need for authority is crucial to maintaining a safe society for diverse individuals and groups. Civic understanding increases as students develop the skills to make informed decisions, to resolve conflicts peacefully. to articulate and defend positions, and to engage in the civic and political life of their communities.
Computer Explorations will enable students to better understand the computer technology available to them, past the basics. Students will be expected to complete various projects using the software provided on their school-issue laptops.

The Freshman Forum is a scheduled time for the students to come together as a class. During these sessions, students will participate in activities that are intentionally designed to help them enter and succeed in college and beyond. One major component of the Forum is the Personal Learning Plan (PLP), in which students will create and collect material in order that they acheive their goals. All freshman teachers take part in the Forum, as this time is also a time to make connections and participate in community-building activities.

Spanish 1 is an introduction to Spanish and its culture explored through reading, writing, speaking and listening.
This year, Spanish 2 will be a course that reviews concepts that were acquired in first year Spanish along with new concepts for this year. You will be reading, writing, speaking, and listening in Spanish. Not only will grammar and vocabulary be a vital part of your learning but also knowledge of different cultures in the Spanish-speaking world. I would expect each student to approach the continuation of learning a foreign language with an open mind and desire to build their skills.

Senior English class that focuses on works outside the US and UK.
World Literature continues to focus on grammar, usage, mechanics, and word choice in writing. Students will also further refine their active reading and lliterary analysis skills by studying short stories, poetry, drama, and class novels. Students will also give two speeches during the semester as well as write a research-based persuasive paper. One major aim of this course is to expose students to authors of various countries to better understand world culture and history. The required novels for this class are: Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe, Paradise of the Blind by Duong Thu Huong, Before We Were Free by Julia Alvarez, and the autobiography Night by Elie Wiesel. All reading and writing outcomes for these units are aligned with the Diocesan curriculum.

Integration with the core classes will always be a priority. At the end of the year students will take the State of Michigan Technology Literacy Exam demonstrating their knowledge of skills acquired. In class we will also continue developing the EDP (Education Development Plan) that students started in 7th grade using the program My Dream Explorer.
Journalism will meet on Fridays for all 7th graders The course will be responsible for producing a newspaper for the middle school. We will have some groundwork in the beginning as far as writing, photography, and publishing a document. Once we have achieved some basics we will begin to get the school newspaper out on a regular basis.
This is a communication and collaborative work space for a community group working to reduce emissions and activities that contribute to climate change.
